A Bright Future Begins Here! Recently, NPR ran a story detailing the “Russian Math” phenomenon — the growth of the Russian School of Mathematics from a kitchen-table passion project to a school that serves over 20,000 students across the country. But what is “Russian Math,” and how does it differ from other approaches? “Russian Math” is built on the foundational principle that the cognitive ability of a child — the power to think and reason — is not predetermined at birth, but can actually be developed over time. And that math is by far the best tool for this development.…

Over the 25 years that I have been serious about writing, I’ve met many poets. They all have a different answer to the question, “How do you do it?” I wrote my first poem in a 8th grade English class and have been hooked ever since. It is only in the past ten years, however, that I understand how I do it. Very few of my poems are planned. Many get their start in lines from my journal or random thoughts, observations and quotes that I jot down in a notebook or on my phone. Most finish in a place…
On a winter day in Laguna Beach in 1967, Art Brewer had been in the water enjoying a playful south swell when he hauled himself out onto the sand to rest and warm up. A friend on the beach had been quietly sitting behind a camera and small lens when he asked Brewer if he wouldn’t mind watching his equipment while he went out for a wave or two (albeit on Brewer’s board). “He wanted to go out and surf. He told me I could shoot a few photos if I wanted to,” remembers Brewer today. “I shot a roll…

These fantastic accomplishments show his unique and versatile abilities in three different sports. His track record shows that he wasn’t just involved with the teams…but that they were exceptional…
