Cabo, with its large marina and the beautiful San Lucas Bay where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean, is famous for its casual atmosphere and exciting nightlife. A longtime favorite for sport fishing and those out to land the big one, Cabo also has great beaches, lots of shopping and restaurants, and a variety of all-inclusive hotels and resorts for any budget.
MEDANO BEACH
Considered one of the most popular swimmable beaches in all of Los Cabos, Medano Beach is situated smack dab in the hub of Cabo San Lucas which features bright lights, soft, white-sand beaches, and perfectly turquoise waters. Tourists are attracted by the waters, which offer a variety of activities including swimming, snorkeling, jet-skiing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Onshore, volleyball games are played around the clock while adventurous ones will charter a parasailing trip to get high in the sky. Playa El Medano’s electricity is contagious, as it’s the centerpiece amid hustling and bustling restaurants and bars on the beach, widely considered home base for many a day’s activities. Vendors on the beach sell all sorts of wares, including everything from silver jewelry and blankets to sombreros and trinkets. You could spend all day at the beach and still not have done half of the fun things offered. Another fine point of the beach is the sweeping views of the rock formations of Land’s End, including El Arco. Hotels and resorts that range from family-friendly to adults-only frame the beach and restaurants. For placing yourself right in the center of all the action, top-notch hotels and resorts on the beach include Villa La Estancia Resort, Hotel Riu Palace Baja California, and Villa del Palmar Beach Resort & Spa.
LAND’S END “EL ARCO”
Land’s End is the anglicized name for the famous arches that adorn postcards and advertising for Los Cabos, Mexico which in Spanish are simply called El Arco (the arch). A much-loved landmark in Cabo and one of the most popular tours for visitors, Land’s End Cabo is a geographical wonder as well as a great location for adventures and activities for all the family. Located at the southern end of Cabo San Lucas and sandwiched between Playa del Amor and Playa del Divorcio, these rock formations were created from the rough winds and seas of the southern Baja Peninsula. Sea lions frequent the area (especially along the Los Frailes rock formation), and Land’s End remains excellent for couples looking for a romantic spot to see the sunset. Recent travelers said this area is particularly picturesque (making for great photo ops) and the best way to see it is from one of the water taxis or boat tours (some even offer glass-bottom boats so you can check out the sea life as well). Travelers especially warn against swimming on the Pacific Ocean side of Land’s End, as the surf can get very rough, pulling swimmers away from shore and out toward the ocean. You can’t reach Land’s End on foot, the best way to get there is via water taxi from the downtown marina. Your hotel can also help you arrange a tour, though it will likely be more expensive than what’s offered at the marina.
WHALE WATCH CABO
With several species of whales making their way to the area every year, whale watching is extremely popular in Cabo, with many visitors saying it’s an absolute must-do activity. Generally, the best time to spot whales is between December through April, with January through March offering the chance to see baby whales, too. There are several tour companies specializing in whale-watching adventures. Whale Watch Cabo, which recent visitors rave about, offers boat tours with expert marine biologists serving as guides. When whales are spotted, they drop a marine hydrophone into the water so you can listen to the animals singing. Another nice touch is that the company includes professional photos taken by its guides on the trip with all its tours. CaboTrek is another popular operator, which offers a variety of tours and also features a marine biologist on board to narrate, hydrophone, and take photos. Most tours span 2 ½ hours and are offered several times a day. For the calmest waters, CaboTrek recommends taking the first morning tour, when there are few boats on the water. For the best chance of seeing the whales, opt for the late afternoon tour. The waters are rougher and you may get wet, but the company reports seeing the most whale activity at this time of day. Tour packages vary by company, with different lengths of times, types of boats and inclusions, so visit their websites for more information.
