Wellness, Relaxation and the Sea at the OCÉANO Health Spa Hotel in Tenerife

The Atlantic Ocean sets the rhythm at the OCÉANO Health Spa Hotel in Tenerife. Sometimes calm and endless, sometimes turbulent with powerful crashing waves – it casts a spell over guests and the team alike. And it is the foundation for the unique concept of the sustainable health and wellness hotel, one of the leading establishments worldwide, on the largest Canary Island.

Seawater pools, treatments with mud and seaweed from the Atlantic, the weightlessness found in the thalassotherapy pool, the morning yoga offering with an unobstructed view of the waves – the ocean is omnipresent and is found throughout wellness treatments, health services as well as in the design. “What could be better suited than the sea to reconnect with one’s own self?” asks the OCÉANO team on its website, describing not only the connection to the Atlantic but also the goal of the hotel and a message for its guests.

BETWEEN THE MOUNTAINS AND THE SEA
The OCÉANO Health Spa Hotel was the fulfillment of a dream that grew during years of traveling through Spain. Chocolatier Karl Rolle and his wife Käthe discovered the site where the hotel now stands in the mid-1960s. The headland at the very end of Tenerife seemed to be the final destination of their travels. To the west, the view opens onto the infinitely wide Atlantic Ocean. Behind it, gentle hills stretch out until the Teide finally rises high and captures the observer’s gaze.

In 1975, the time had come: after long hours at their desks, Karl and Käthe stood in front of their dream and welcomed their first guests. Only three years later, the joy of the early days was shattered. A severe storm destroyed the lower floors and meant that almost all the hotels on the West Coast had to close in the years that followed. The OCÉANO remained. The lower floors were renovated and the hotel became increasingly established.

    Milestones

    • 1994 – Complete renovation of the hotel
    • 2001 – Opening of the F. X. Mayr Centre as the heart of the hotel’s health department
    • 2005 – Takeover of the hotel by the current owner and grandson of the founder Karl Matthias Rolle and his wife
    • 2012 – Re-opening of the Thalasso Centre and the newly designed sauna area
    • 2019 – Redesign of the OCÉANO Health Spa Hotel

    THE NEW OCÉANO
With a rugged natural environment and the sea on the doorstep, respectful treatment of both has always been firmly integrated into the hotel’s philosophy. Over the years, sustainable business practices and management have become increasingly important, which was most recently reflected in the major renovation in 2019.

We have now also realized our modern, holistic concept physically with the redesign of the hotel.
    Karl Matthias Rolle

Modern design, bright rooms with a sea view, natural materials, and cozy furniture create a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere. The garden with its native plants is popular with guests as an oasis of relaxation and invites them to sunbathe.

During the renovation, the original building was preserved and gently adapted to the new concept. Natural and environmentally friendly building materials were used, as well as modern and energy-saving technologies. The new façade reflects the sea and new spaces were created such as the yoga roof terrace, the rooftop bar Ocean 11 Lounge, and the Centre of Healthy Motion. Recently, the OCÉANO was also awarded a sustainability prize for the ecological renovation of the property.

That Special Something: Combination of Health, Wellness, and Sea

Omnipresent, beating heart, center of tranquillity, source of energy. In the OCÉANO, the sea is all this and more. You can look out over the ocean from almost anywhere, the sound of the waves can be heard at all times. A place to really arrive and let go.

    MORE MOVEMENT
Several pools filled with the water of the Atlantic Ocean await guests and, thanks to the mild climate, invite them to swim all year round. An absolute highlight is the natural swimming pool Piscina Natural, which is only separated from the Atlantic by a single wall. Many guests swim their first laps here early in the morning and enjoy the special morning atmosphere. Even, or perhaps especially when the waves are higher, swimming here is an experience that will linger in anyone’s memory. The waves then wash over the wall and into the Piscina Natural.

From the seawater infinity pool in the garden, the view opens up across the ocean. Surrounded by tall palm trees, guests can swim their laps in peace and relax on a deck chair afterwards.

The thalassotherapy pool, also filled with seawater, awaits the guests of the OCÉANO. The salty water, which is at body temperature, ensures deep relaxation and the famous feeling of floating.

Even outside the pools, the connection to the ocean remains, whether during yoga on the roof terrace or during a morning workout dubbed “Awakening by the Sea”. The Centre of Healthy Motion is a brand-new invitation to conscious movement and fitness. Guests can train here under professional guidance, book yoga sessions, or work out on the in-house bouldering wall. A tennis court is also available.

    MORE HEALTH
The OCÉANO Health Spa Hotel is one of the leading health hotels worldwide and offers guests and patients an all-around carefree package from arrival to departure. Individual and professionally supervised fasting treatments, nutrition and fitness programmes can be attended, the aim of which above all is a new sense of well-being and a healthier way of life.

The treatment concepts are precisely tailored to the needs of the patients and, depending on the programme, the stay is medically supervised. This includes preliminary discussions, medical consultations as well as the adjustment of treatments and programmes during the stay.

    MORE RELAXATION
The Atlantic is not only a source of energy and strength, but also the at the core of many health and wellness treatments at OCÉANO. Seawater, the seabed, air, and algae are used in a carefully targeted way to ensure relaxation and a new sense of well-being. The effects are not only psychological but also physical: seawater and the special climate stimulate circulation and metabolism, strengthen muscles and joints and promote oxygen intake and regeneration.

A special therapy is Ocean Balancing in the Thalasso pool. The already relaxing floating is enhanced by gentle movements. Therapists move the patients in such a way that blockages are gently released and even deeper relaxation can occur.

ARRIVE AT THE OCÉANO – AND WITH YOURSELF
The unique location between mountains and sea, the concept that focuses on the health and well-being of the guests, and the connection to the region, not only to nature but also to the local people, make the OCÉANO an ideal retreat to get back to oneself. You can read about how such a stay might look in this experience report. You can find more information, including on their social commitments and other green initiatives, at www.greenpearls.com.
