Spearheaded by owners Allan Rivera and Joe Diorio, Renaissance Studios ushers in the newest wave of fine-art tattooing.
His name is James McDonald. He’s 26 years old, a tattoo artist for a couple of years now. Ever since he was a little kid, he had some sort of artistic tool in his hands—pencils, crayons, pens, always something to draw with. He took art classes in high school, and even back then he knew his ultimate goal was to be a tattoo artist. “I love the way ink looks on skin,” he says. “And being the one who can create a lifelong piece of art on someone makes it that much more intriguing.”
He was just 23 when he inked his first tattoo. A friend let him tattoo a decent-size skull on his thigh. “He still likes it, so I figured I did pretty good for my first piece,” he says with a laugh. “I currently work at Renaissance Tattoo Studios. It’s a great environment, and being surrounded by people just as driven to create art as I am, is truly a blessing.”
His artwork is constantly evolving, and his passion for his trade tells him he’s found the right place to be at in life, at exactly the right time. Renaissance has a good vibe right when you walk in the door, and that probably makes all the difference. “Going to work knowing we are creating something that will last forever, makes it feel less like work and more like our purpose.”
Renaissance Studios is located in the heart of San Clemente, California, with a group of highly motivated artists that specialize in completely custom and one-of-a-kind tattoos.
