Dive into sunken treasure at the Ocean Institute
An underwater archaeologist will tell you that there is lots more to their work than finding sunken treasure, but that is exactly what campers will get to do in the Ocean Institute’s newest summer camp — Shipwreck Hunter.
During week-long sessions in July, students age 9-10 will get to immerse themselves in the world of pirate treasure, tall ship sailing, and underwater archaeology! This unique camp experience combines the best of what the Ocean Institute has to offer in their science and living history programs to create an unparalleled experience. From physics to chemistry and beyond, campers will learn the methods and techniques used every day by underwater archeologists, museums, and salvage crews.
During the week, campers will investigate renowned sunken ships of the past including the Bounty and the Lusitania as well as learn the basics of tall ship sailing and what life on board ships was like during the golden age of exploration!
Dan Goldbacher, Director of Maritime Education, says that “Kids are going to get really excited about searching for sunken treasure, but there is so much more to this camp than that! They are going to learn real scientific techniques and practice skills used every day by professionals in underwater resource preservation and conservation fields.”
Developed in collaboration with experts in the field, this camp will give participants the opportunity to explore science and history in a way that cannot be found anywhere else in our region. In its inaugural season, Ocean Institute is only offering two sessions of this camp, July 9th-13th and July 23rd-27th, so reserve your space now before they are sold out!
