September 6 & 7, 2014 (Sunset Parade Sail Sept. 5)
An armada of tall ships is coming to the Ocean Institute in Dana Point to celebrate the 30th annual Toshiba Tall Ships® Festival. This year’s festival, in partnership with Tall Ships America’s Pacific Coast TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® series, highlights California’s rich maritime history and welcomes 10 historic tall ships to Dana Point. The ships will parade down the southern California coast for a Sunset Parade on Friday, September 5th. The festival will be held on Saturday and Sunday, September 6 & 7, 10am – 5pm, with non-stop activities and events throughout the Ocean Institute’s facility, event grounds and aboard the ships, including mock-cannon battles in the evening.
Highlights Include:
- Real working tall ships, meet the crews and tour the ships’ decks
- Interactive living-history encampments, including blacksmiths, scrimshaw artists, knot tiers, and pirate encampments
- Naval Historical Foundation reenactments onboard the brig Pilgrim
- Swashbuckling fun for youngsters with Radio Disney, Disney Junior, and Clint Perry and the Boo Hoo Crew
- Pirate school for kids (pirate costumes encouraged)
- Parrot Jack’s Pirate Parrot Training Camp shows
- Marine science labs and activities inside the Ocean Institute
- Interactive exhibits from the Institute of Nautical Archaeology
- Seafaring Arts workshops (make rope, tie knots, and carve scrimshaw)
- Epic Cannon Battles at night (additional fee)
- Artisans, shopping, food, music and much more!
Pirate Adventure Pass (General Admission Ticket)
Ahoy mates, get ready for some swashbuckling fun! Pirate Adventure Passes include deck tours on all tall ships, activities aboard the brig Pilgrim and all activities inside the Ocean Institute.

Cost: Members: $5/ages 3 and up; Non-members: $8/ages 3 and up
*Ship deck tours end at 3:30pm, except Pilgrim remains open until 5pm; Pilgrim will close during live shows and crew demonstrations.
Sunset Parade Sails
Join the armada as you cast off for adventure aboard a historic tall ship during the annual tall ships parade at sunset. Work with the crew hauling up sail or simply sit back and enjoy the spectacular demonstration of skill, knowledge and survival!

Cannon Battles Sails
Sail onboard a tall ship during the popular mock cannon battles. Experience the sights, smells, and sounds of a real working tall ship! Enjoy blasting cannons, towering rigging, bustling decks and the magnificence of canvas full of wind. FREE Pirate Adventure Pass with purchase of Cannon Battle ticket!

Sunset Parade Escort Cruise
Enjoy a sunset cruise aboard the R/V Sea Explorer while experiencing the beauty and joy of the grand opening of the Toshiba Tall Ships Festival. Escort cruises provide guests with a shorter “at sea experience” aboard a motorized vessel. Our captain carefully maneuvers around the tall ships, providing guests with opportunities to photograph the ships.
